My dog has bloody diarrhea & vomiting from cat food. See a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 25 lbs

My dog has had some vomiting and diarrhea since about 6 pm yesterday. I think she ate too much of the cat’s food, so I don’t know whether to wait for it to clear up on its own, or take her to the vet immediately. Her stool started runny but normal color. We gave her pepto and watched her overnight. Her stool today is dark, runny, with some mucus, and I just found what appears to be blood. She’s eating and drinking water as usual and is currently sleeping. Does this sound like an emergency?

Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast her for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
