My dog has diarrhea. I gave Imodium. Is it safe for a 40-pound dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Kelpie | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 40 lbs

Hello! My dog, an Australian Shepard Mix (which we don’t think is the correct breed), has had very runny diarrhea, and yesterday I gave him an Imodium (2mg, he is 40 pounds), and he seems perfectly fine but just wanted to clarify that the Imodium won’t give him poisoning of any sort or if I should be concerned with anything? He’s still playing and running around and eating/drinking. It has been over 24 hours since I gave it to him.

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about radar's troubles! However I think he should be ok as that is in the dose range I am familiar with. I just wouldn't give it again if the diarrhea is continuing. It's best to have him checked by his vet if that's the case! I hope you find this answer helpful! Best of luck!
