Why is my puppy gagging and coughing but not throwing up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 24 days old | 2.5 lbs

I recently was given a puppy. No more then 2 months, she's still teething. For two days, she has been gagging but no vomit. It happens randomly. Middle of the night, during naps, or after playing. I dont think it could be the food cause it doesn't happen right after. Her pop is soft solid and urine is good for a puppy. Plays like a puppy and no other problems but that. Been watching what she puts in her mouth and nothing. Any idea what it could be?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your puppy. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian as I suspect that she has an upper respiratory tract infection. This is common in puppies. They will cough, gag and may produce a white foamy material. Eye or nose discharge may or may not be present. If this is the case, she will likely need to start on an antibiotic. In the meantime, keep her quiet and at home. She may be contagious to other dogs. I hope this information helps!
