My dog has a painful lump and is sore after vaccines. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 13 lbs

Sonic received vaccines this past Monday. As of yesterday (3 days after his vx’s) he’s been super sensitive when I pick him up or touch his back and seems like he’s in pain when I do so. He does also have a lump on his back where the vaccines were administered. Is this normal? How long until it goes away if it’s due to the vaccines? He did not have that lump before Monday so I’m concerned. Thanks in advance.

Sometimes after vaccinations dogs can be sore from them. They can also get a localized reaction which can feel like a lump where the vaccination was given. I would call your veterinarian and explain your concern. They can prescribe an anti-inflammatory for him and can evaluate the lump to see if it is a localized reaction. This is not an emergency unless he is in a severe amount of pain so you can wait until your regular veterinarian opens tomorrow. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
