Why won't my dog eat but drinks tons of water after vet check?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 months and 17 days old | 115 lbs

But he went to the vet yesterday and they said he’s fine! My dog will go through week long periods on and off of completely eating his food and drinking water regularly. To not wanting to eat food and just drink gallons and gallons of water. I take water away after he drinks then he eats only a tiny bit. He eats 2 cups of kibble with wet food mixed. He will refuse to eat! He wants to eat in his own time not when i tell him even though he is hungry. He stares me down when i tell him to eat

I would wonder if he isn't really eating those days, he isn't getting the water intake from the wet food so he in turn is drinking more. The days he doesn't want to eat maybe his stomach isn't feel that great and that is why he is off of food. Some dogs do not eat twice a day and some eat very small amounts throughout the day. If he is not overweight and looks healthy I wouldn't force him to eat but understand when he isn't eating the wet food he will drink more water.
