My dog's rear smells, leaves clear liquid. Are anal glands expressing?

Hello! My dogs rear end has been smelling a lot lately. I’m suspecting her anal glands are impacted. One day when she got up after sitting there was a clear liquid on our couch and it smelled just like what her end smells like. She is in the transition of raw feeding. Her stools have been hard. Does the liquid mean her anal glands are naturally expressing? I do not want to go to the vet and express them unless an infection occurs. Please help. Thank you!

Yes this does sound like she is expressing them spontaneously. We are still not fully aware of what causes this, but adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) can help with this in some cases. As long as she isn't licking the area or scooting, then they likely are not impacted. Also anal gland contents often get dark and gritty when they are impacted, and don't express easily like this. It also sounds like going back to her normal diet, not the raw food, may be the only way to stop this if this occurred at the same time as the food switch. I hope this helps! Best wishes and take care.
