My dog is lifting her front leg and limping. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 3 years and 10 months old | 11 lbs

My dog is having trouble walking on her front right leg; she’s just walking around with it lifted up. She’s tried walking on it but she keeps putting it back up. She’s still her usual playful self but I’m still worried about it. My brother suggested giving her a bath just in case she has a bite or tick but I did that and also sprayed her with some flea and tick spray. I also thought about her leg possibly being asleep but she’s been like this for about an hour. She’s a 3yr terrier/chihuahua.

It sounds like Cici is painful, and she could have injured her leg. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
