Weaning 3-week-old puppies: kibble & water or milk replacer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 4 months old | 109 lbs

My puppies are officially 3 weeks old today and I am going to be giving them their first bowl of grool/mush so I can start weaning them! They’re already getting they’re little tooth’s! I was wondering which is best, cause I read that 2 parts water and 1 part kibble for their first try but I also read you can put puppy milk replacer as well so I was wondering what’s best? Just kibble and water, or kibble and milk replacer? Thank you :)

I recommend the milk replacer. I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry puppy food only. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
