Is my adopted cat hiding and vomiting due to new pet stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 5 years old | 10.8 lbs

We just adopted a five-year-old tabby. He was doing fine for 2 days and very loving. Now we have a nine month old in the house, and the older cat has secluded himself and hardly ever ask for attention. And he is also throwing up mostly clear liquid. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with his adjusting to the new pet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vomiting can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I do not think the vomiting can be attributed to stress or the adjustment to the new pet. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Treatment would depend on findings. Good luck and have a great day!
