My senior cat is constipated. Will prescription food & Metamucil help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered

My cat is 8 yrs old. I’ve noticed he is nit pooping. Took to vet they took x Ray. Had to put him to sleep and go in and clean him out best they could. They say he needs a prescription type cat food. I was wondering is that going to help?? Is there more I can do ?? I read some where about giving him Metamucil? Any ideals to help other than just the food ?? Thanks Allen. He’s still eating good and drinking water acting ok. Thanks

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Trucker. Your veterinarian is correct that a diet can be helpful in managing constipation in cats. However, sometimes a diet is not enough. Additional medications such as Metamucil, miralax, or a medication called lactulose need to be added. If you are not seeing improvement in Trucker’s poops on the diet, I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian to discuss adding a medication. Hope this helps, good luck!
