Why are my kittens and mom cat throwing up and having diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 2 lbs

I have a litter of 5 kittens. They were born on 9/14 into the night on 9/15. Everything has been fine, they started eating hard kitten food, drinking water, using the litter box. Their stools were nice & intact. All the sudden this week they started throwing up & having diarrhea. Mommy cat is throwing up also. They however are still lapping water. They are not very dehydrated. I picked up the skin on their necks & it's not a slow draw back. They are all alert. Please help Amanda J

It's possible everyone has parasites and needs to be dewormed, or there is something causing GI upset such as an ingredient in the food, GI illness, etc. Since everyone is affected, it would be best to bring mom and kittens to your vet along with a stool sample to be tested for common issues such as parasites. As kittens can quickly become dehydrated, having them examined and finding the cause ASAP is a good idea.
