My dog has tapeworms. How did he get them without fleas? Carpet?

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | unneutered | 18 lbs

I recently adopted Koby 4 days ago and I found out he has tape worms after taking him to the doctor today and he was treat but prior to that the vet had already given him pyrantel but he doesn't have any fleas on him so how could he be infected ? And how long does it take for the worms to leave and also how could I treat my carpet from worms and eggs

Fleas hop on and off for feeding. You do not have to find fleas. The tapeworm is dead soon after your dog got the wormer against tape worm. Pyrantel will not work against tape worm, he needs to be wormed with a wormer called praziquantel. There is no need to treat your carpet for worms and worm eggs. Tape worm will not affect humans.
