My kitten has a stuffy nose and breathes through her mouth. Is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed

My 9 month old kitten has a stuffy nose. She is occasionally breathing through her month a couple breaths at a time and then through her nose again. When she does breath through her nose its sounds water. She is drinking fine and still eating her food. Very little discharge of her eyes. It's her first fall and I was wondering if this could be allergies.

This is very unlikely caused by allergies. It is much more likely caused by an upper respiratory infection which is quite common in kittens. I suggest you take Lulu to your veterinarian tomorrow for an exam. In the meantime make sure you clean off any discharge from the nostrils and the eyes as this inhibits the ability to breathe and might keep your kitten from eating (if it cannot taste the food because the nose is plugged)
