My cat is suddenly not eating and hiding. When should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 years and 3 months old | 8 lbs

My cat Sassy is suddenly not eating and hiding. She ate this morning, i came home from work 2 hours ago and while feeding the other cats she went in the corner. Only changes recently is I am fostering a 4 month old cat for last 2 weeks but thats never bothered her, and another cat had dental surgery, was at vets overnight n now back. Only thing l got her to eat so far is her hairball remedy. How long should i monitor before taking to vet and any idea why shes suddenly done this? Thanks.

You shouldn't wait more than 24 hours from her last decent meal, in cats unlike dogs for example, anorexia is always considered as a severe symptom that should be checked and treated ASAP because they can start developing a condition called "Fatty Liver" very soon after they stop eating and this can be very difficult to treat.
