Why is my dog licking his back paw non-stop with no signs of pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 65 lbs

My dog has been licking his back paw restlessly for the past three days, I attached a photo for you to examine. Any ideas what this could be? He’s walking normal and if I touch it he doesn’t flinch or show any sign of pain. Thoughts?

This is due either to an infection, an allergy or an inflammation per sè. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching.
