My cat has severe flea anemia and won't eat. How can I help him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 5 lbs

Male cat, 1 year old. He had been lost, we rushed him to the vet because he was very skinny. Said he had severe flea anemia and hypothermia. His red blood cell count was 9% and his temp was 92.They Gave us the option to put him down or take him home and see what happens. We took him home and it’s day 4 now. At first he wouldn’t eat or drink and would stand up and wobble. Now he licks at soft cat food and drinks water. How do I get him to eat? What are the chances of survival. Is he doin better?

I am sorry to hear about Jeff! It sounds like he is slowly improving. You don't mention if your vet offered any forms of treatment. Things that may be considered would include blood transfusions, intravenous fluids, bloodwork to check for kidney or liver abnormalities that may need treatment, and appetite stimulants which are available as well as high energy diets such as Hills A/D which can be syringe fed if needed. I woud ask your vet if they offer any of these services for your kitty and if they do not offer any options for treatment I would seek a second opinion.
