How to treat my dog's itchy skin, yeast, dandruff, and moist scabs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | 26 lbs

Poppy seems to have an over production of yeast on her body and in her ears. She is on a grain free quality dry food. She is regularly wormed and fleed. Her back is particularly itchy and she rolls around to help scratch it. When I groom her lots of dry dandruff-type skin is found. I have recently used Maleseb because she had areas of dry scaly skin on her tummy and back but this time the scabs are moist scaly skin and can be picked off with the nail taking hair with it.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Poppy! If this is year round then I would consider a prescription food. Most dogs do not have a grain allergy but are allergic to the meat protein. So if her skin issues are year I would bite the bullet and go prescription like, Royal canin HP, Hill's z/d or Purina HA. Be careful with grain free diets: https://www.fda.gov/animalveterinary/newsevents/cvmupdates/ucm613305.htm I would start her on an Omega 3 supplement and an antihistamine for long term use with the prescription diet. Based on your post I think she may now have a bacterial infection so she should see your Vet to confirm that. She could have a combined yeast and bacterial infection and need both an oral antibiotic and anti-fungal. I would also consider long term apooquel or cytopoint for her allergies. I wish you the best https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/zyrtec/ https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=19121
