My dog has diarrhea after new food, but is still active. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

Kruze my 7 y/o shihtzu is having diarrhea but besides that he still eating and drinking water. He is still active (for him-which is not all that active, maybe playing once a day) I did recently switch foods but it's been a little over a week and the diarrhea has only been going on the last few days. He's had a sensitive stomach in the past, but over the years he kind of seemed to have grown out of that. He has a sister - a year younger shihtzu-yorkie mix who is not experiencing any problems.

It is likely that changing his food is causing his intestines to rebel and therefor he has diarrhea. You probably should go back to feeding him the food he was used to after a period of feeding him bland food. I would fast Kruze for 12 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
