Concerned about a lump under my female dog's belly. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed

Hello I have 6 yr old female Chihuahua. She seems to have devolped some type of ball under her belly. It's been a month since I first noticed it. She seems to be fine with no discomfort when I touch it. I am concerned on what it could be before I decide to take her to the vet.

This appears to be a mass under the skin near one of her mammary glands. It is possible that this may be a mass associated with her mammary gland or just a mass in this location. Dogs can develop benign or malignant masses under their skin. There was no way to know what this mass is without having it sampled by your family veterinarian. Because it is in close association with a mammary gland it is important to have this evaluated to make sure this is not a mammary tumor. When you see your family vet they will recommend initially taking a needle sample of this mass for cytology to try to determine what it is. Removal with biopsy may also be recommended if the needle cytology does not reveal the answer or if this is suspected to be mammary gland in origin. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
