Kitten under a month: When is it safe for vet check-up and shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 7 days old

I just took in a kitten, probably younger than a month. Is it safe to take it in to PetCo’s clinic for a check up and possible vaccination?

Hello. If the kitten is truly under 1 mobth of age, it is too young for vaccinations. The recommended age for first vaccines is 8 weeks. It may be old enough for worm medication but unless it has a problem such as diarrhea..... it may be okay to wait until the vaccination visit. If you are unsure of the kittens age, someone at the clinic can give you a quick assessment of its age and if it is okay to start immunizations.
