Dog has red, swollen genitals with a bump. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old | 75 lbs

My dog frequently likes to sleep upside down with all four legs spread out in the air and the last few nights I’ve noticed some type of skin irritation/inflammation on her genitals. There also now appears to be some kind of bump forming. I haven’t noticed her licking the area or being bothered by it. Is there something I can give her to get rid of the redness and swelling?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to a mild infection and/or allergies. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
