Dog's diarrhea came back after Metronidazole. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old

I took my dog to the Emergency room because he had blood in his diarrhea . The doctor prescribed Metronidazole Tabs for 5 days. His poop came out solid for 2 days and ever since he been off its back to diarrhea. I've been feeding my dog nothing but rice water, rice, chicken and his normal dog food brand. Should I take him back to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Simba! I would consider a course of a probiotic like Purina Fortifkora or Nutramax Proviable. I would also call your vet and ask for a prescription intestinal diet to feed for a week or two. Also drop off a stool sample to check for worms. Chicken and rice is okay but he may need something that will help him quicker. If the probiotic and diet don’t help then he should be rechecked. Good luck!
