My 3-month-old puppy bites hard and won't stop. How do I train him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 23 days old | 17 lbs

I have a three month old black lab and he bites and plays like any regular puppy except that when he plays, he bites so hard and will not stop and doesn’t respond to the word NO. I have also tried ignoring him when he nips but he usually keeps trying. He bites more, bites harder, and lunges. He has ropes, rawhides, balls, and tugging toys to play with which i try to distract him with. I am unsure how to dicipline him effectively since I feel as if I tried everything in the book.

When he begins to bite too hard, stop all interaction and playing. If necessary, place him in another room until he settles down. Be firm and be consistent. At his age, he's going to be chewing everything. It is up to you to teach him what is appropriate and what is not. Focus less on the negative and praise the positive. When he chews appropriately, praise and reward him.
