My rat's tail got caught in her cage door. Is it degloving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 1lb

Hi, my rat had the tip of her tail closed in her cage door. It bleeded very little and it’s a small cut. I’m worried that it could start to deglove.

A minor wound may heal on it's own as long as you keep the area clean and dry. Use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to gently clean the wound. It could be painful, so a visit to your veterinarian for an exam would be indicated. Your vet can dispense medication for pain and antibiotics if indicated.
