My dog's vulva has a spot after heat. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 6 lbs

Just discovered a spot on my dogs vulva which had to have just shown up today. She is definitely bothered by it as she continues to lick herself. She’s just come off her heat cycle. Should I take her to the vet?

Which could be a spot of inflammation which could possibly be due to an infection in the area. In case some discharge is present, a deeper and more serious infection could be there as well. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
