Dog licking after grooming? How to soothe irritation and itching.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 10 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

Our female schnauzer got groomed yesterday and it looks like she has a little irritation on her privates and won't stop licking. There is no discharge or blood, just a little red. She won't quit licking or scratching at it and was wondering what we could do to help her out. She doesn't seem pained, just appears to be itching. Any type of a medication or a cream that would make her not be itching? Thanks, Brad

Sounds like she may have a little bit of irritation from the clippers used for her hair cut. Do you have an E collar at home? The easiest thing to do is just prevent them from licking because the more they lick the more irritated it will become. You can also try applying a bit of topical steroid (like hydrocortisone) but you just want to make sure that she doesn't lick it off after application which is why the e-collar is helpful. If the lesion is not improving, or looking worse with the topical medication, I would contact your vet for advice. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
