Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 28.8 lbs
Our vet prescribed Apoquel 5.4mg for our dog, because he has been searching and licking. We found a few scabbed up sores on his underbelly which was why we took him to see them. We have been reading about the medication and are concerned about wether it is actually safe to give. What are your thoughts?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Apoquel is a drug that is used to help control allergy symptoms (itching, licking, scratching) in dogs. Side effects are minimal but may include vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, lethargy, and decreased appetite. Serious adverse effects such as decrease white blood cell count and hemoglobin are uncommon. Some veterinarians will recommend yearly blood work on patients who are on Apoquel for long term use. Like any drug, even human drugs, there is always a risk for side effects but if the benefit (controlled allergy symptoms) outweighs the risk (side effects), then it may be beneficial to try the drug and continue its use. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!
