My dog is throwing up. Can she catch my stomach virus or bug?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 10 years and 8 months old | 100 lbs

My dog has thrown up three times today. It is mostly just food. She never pukes this much but she is not lethargic. We are very concerned because me and my two siblings are also sick and throwing up, we want to know what kind of bug is going around our house. Can humans transfer a stomach virus to dogs? If not, any idea of what is going on? Are the illnesses related of is it just a coincidence in timing?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While it is possible there may be a zoonotic (transmissible to humans and animals) bug floating around your house, I would say it is probably unlikely. Certain bacteria like Salmonella and E.Coli and certain viruses can be transmissible from animal to people and vice versa, however there may be another cause for Layla's frequent vomiting such as a gastrointestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, organ dysfunction, or certain types of cancers. I would strongly recommend Layla see her veterinarian for an exam an evaluation. Your veterinarian may recommend blood work and x-rays to help determine a cause. I hope this helps and I hope everyone starts feeling better soon!
