My dog keeps itching. Zyrtec works, but he hates it. Could it be dust?

The vet suggested Children's Zyrtec. I did that for awhile but he hated it & I hated to force him to take it. He did stop itching & I quit giving it to him. A few months later he started again. I was giving him Allergy vitamin chews & that didn't seem to work. So I stopped all supplements & started back on the Zyrtec. They eat Merrick Grain Free food. I switched to washing all their blankets in Free detergent. I have Burt's Bees hotshot spray; nothing seems to help. Could it be the house dust? Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 5.5 lbs

It is unlikely a food allergy since it got better. Most commonly allergies are from things in the environment such as grasses, pollens and dust. It can be worse in some seasons depending on what they are allergic to. If the antihistamine works week I would stay on that. If it is not working well then yiu can talk to your vet about prescription medication made for itching and allergies Giving a bath weekly can also help with itching from allergies as it helps rinse their coata
