My dog is licking a sore on his leg. Is it a hot spot or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 10 lbs

I noticed yesterday that my dog was licking a spot on the top of his back leg yesterday, but he wouldnt let me go near him. I have looked again today, and it looks like a sore or burn? It looks like it was a bit pussy, but isnt oozing. I've trimmed the area of hair around it so he can lick to clean it as he couldn't do previously as he is a long haired dachshund.

This looks like an area of infection, commonly referred to as moist dermatitis or a ‘hot spot’. This usually occurs because a dog will itch excessively at an area causing a breakdown in the skin barrier and this leads to infection. Since the spot is still fairly small you can try treating it at home by cleaning it with some dilute hydrogen peroxide and applying some triple antibiotic ointment to the wound. If the itch persists or the area does not clear up then I would recommend taking Peeps in to the vet to be examined. Sometimes these cases need oral antibiotics to help them clear up. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

It could be a hot spot (moist dermatitis). This would need to be confirmed by your veterinarian after a physical exam. Typical treatment, if a hot spot is diagnosed, may include shaving the area and scrubbing it. Oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories may treat infection and control itch. An e-collar (cone) should be used to prevent further licking or chewing. The underlying cause should be treated if possible to prevent recurrence. This could be good allergies, environmental allergies or even fleas.
