My puppy's eye is red and crusty. What should I do? Vet or home care?

My 3 moth old Chiweenie looks like she woke up with conjunctivitis, She has been itching her right eye the past couple days and now it looks alittle red and this morning it was crusted over. How can I take care of this, are there drops for her eye? or should she see her veterinarian? should this be a emergency concern? Thank you

Hi there! It does sound like Penny may have an eye infection (conjunctivitis), or may have a corneal scratch or ulcer causing the redness and discharge. She will need prescription eye drops from your vet to treat this problem, so I would definitely recommend taking her in today for an exam if you can. In the meantime, you can try gently rinsing her eye with plain saline eye wash, and using a warm washcloth or cotton ball to wipe away the crusty discharge. This will not treat the underlying infection, but may help to make her a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.
