Why is my male cat only urinating small amounts? Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 1lb

Male, 12m old cat was going outside litter box, i think that stopped from what I can see but when he goes in his box, he only lets out a little. I took him to vet and was told there is no reason to worry for now and that it's prob stress (construction in home). He was given meds to calm him. I asked if it could get worse and was told they can't say. Not happy with that answer and want a 2nd opinion. should I worry? I bought him a fountain so he'll drink more water and I'm changing his diet. TY!

I am sorry to hear about Gizmo. You don't mention if the vet did any testing on him to check for infection or crystals in the urine. If they did not, I would recommend he have this done if the symptoms are continuing, just to be thorough. Based on your description it sounds like your vet suspects he has idiopathic cystitis, or inflammation of the bladder that is not due to infection. This can affect younger cats and causes painful urination in small amounts. The scary part is with male cats they can develop an obstruction of the urethra and then cannot urinate and this is a medical emergency. You can read more about idiopathic cystitis at: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=612 which discusses possible causes of the condition, treatment (if your cat is not on pain medication I would request some for him as it can be painful for him), and methods of preventing future episodes.
