My senior cat won't eat k/d food, has hyperthyroidism & constipation.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 16 years and 5 months old | 9.7 lbs

I have 16+yr old female orange tabby who is on hill's k/d dry food and is possibly showing signs of early hyperthyroidism(just had bloodwork done again). She also has been taking mirtazapine about 2mg every other day(more before but it seemed too much). Her appetite seems better but she stopped eating the wet K/d pate. She's having what seems like constipation. I'm trying different things. She likes spring water and the kibble wet. Using a water additive for dental disease(oxyfresh)Help please.

I am sorry for the delay in answering your question! If your biggest concern is her appetite, talk to your veterinarian about how strict he or she wants to be with the k/d. Some cats just don't like it that much. Your vet may recommend a different kidney diet. It is also reasonable to consider that quality of life and keeping her eating SOMETHING may be better than trying to get her to eat a kidney specific diet in hopes of keeping her kidneys healthy for longer. Soft food is better, as soft food has more water content. If you are concerned with constipation the more water she has the better. Also, keep water available in multiple areas throughout your home. I hope that helps you, thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
