My large dog has allergies. What OTC allergy medicine can I try?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has allergies and did really well on apoquel. He didn’t do so well on Benadryl. What other over the counter allergy medicine can I try for a 100lb dog?

I am sorry to hear about Rosco. Unfortunately no over the counter medication will work as well as Apoquel. Over the counter options are limited to antihistamines (the ones we commonly use include Benadryl and Zyrtec) and Apoquel is a different class of drug altogether. You can ask your vet if they carry Cytopoint which is effective in many atopic dogs and is a little less expensive in some cases than Apoquel. It is actually an injection. You can also discuss an Omega fatty acid supplement with your vet (these can decrease inflammation and itching in the skin) and topical treatments such as a colloidal oatmeal shampoo and creme rinse (such as Epi-soothe) or Duoxo Calm products (these are available online). You can also ask your vet if they feel a trial of Zyrtec would be appropriate for your dog.
