Why is my hyper Chihuahua lethargic, peeing inside, but eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 4 years and 6 months old | 5 lbs

4 yr old Chihuahua. Eating well, but laying around wanting to sleep and rest. Unusual because she is overly hyper. Love running out the door 20 times a day. I had to force her to go out twice today. Peed in the floor today, haven't done that since she was 6 weeks old. Should I be concerned?

Considering she is normally very lively and happy, and now hardly wants to move, has accidents in the house and apparently does not feel well, I think you should take her to a veterinarian for an exam. All these signs are very unspecific, so your vet needs to do a thorough exam and likely will want to do blood work to check her organ systems and blood for signs of disease. I do not think it is an emergency, however if she has not reverted to her normal self by tomorrow, a vet visit is in order.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is precious! This would be concerning if it continues. This could in theory be a one time occurrence. However, continued lethargy can be a sign of a bigger issue such as a disease affecting the cardio respiratory system, among many other possibilities as that is in general a fairly non-specific symptom. If this continues or it worsens, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
