My dog ate grapes, didn't vomit. What are the signs of grape toxicity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 19.8 lbs

Yesterday , around 12:45p my 10 yr old dog ate 6-7 grapes . He was at the vet within :45. Despite two hydrogen peroxide doses and an injection of hydromorphone he did not vomit ! After 3 hrs we brought him home - no vomit , he had one bout of diarrhea about 11pm . Today he is acting normal ,peed and pooped (soft) but he is not interested in food yet . What should I look for now? His treatment must have been traumatic . Any suggestions? He has NEVER vomited in his life .

I would be a little concerned that Wilson is not interested in food yet. Hydromorphone lasts up to 6 hours, so it should no longer be causing nausea. Unfortunately ingestion of even a few grapes can cause kidney failure, so I would recommend seeing the vet again to have his kidney values checked - most veterinary toxicologists recommend checking kidney values and a urine sample every 24 hours for 3 days after grapes are ingested. Of course it's also possible that he hasn't been interested in food because he's a picky eater or he's not feeling well for another reason, but I think the safest course of action would be to see your vet as soon as a you can.
