My older dog won't eat kibble. Is human food making him picky or sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 6 years and 4 months old | 100 lbs

why is my dog shorty eating as much? he growls sometimes. more then he usaly does. we feed him chips and stuff. not every day really. and sometimes give him green beens too. We also give him a hamburger about 2 times a month. also that is not every day. is our dog just getting old? or is he getting sick? if he is getting sick will he get better? we got shorty about 2012 or 2013.

There are many many reasons for an older dog to have a decreased appetite. I would suggest refraining from giving him people food because he will refuse his dog food and hold out for the people food instead, which can give the illusion that he is ill, when he is just being picky. I would instead recommend adding in canned dog food that has different flavors if you want to give him some variety. As far as inquiring whether he is actually ill or not, I would suggest getting him a general health check up through your vet. This usually entails some bloodwork and urinalysis to check his internal organ functions and make sure nothing comes up abnormal. Otherwise, he doesn't sound like he is gravely ill, but in need of a good health check. I hope that your pet Shorty is just being a picky eater and that there is nothing underlying going on there. Best wishes and take care!
