My dog took oxycodone. Is it an emergency? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 12 years and 1 month old | 36 lbs

My dog has been taking Tramadol 4 months on longer. He ran out so I gave him 2.5 mg of oxycodone. He is 36 lb. He is also on prednisone 2.5 mg every other day. I just read that you never give a K-9 oxycodone! What should I do? Is this an emergency?

The proper dose of oxycodone for a dog would be 0.3mg/kg. Your dog weighs 16 kg, so the normal dose would be 4.8mg. So this should not have any detrimental effect on your dog. That said, however, please do not give your dog oxycodone without consent of your veterinarian. It may not be appropriate for your dog depending on his health status.
