What are these recurring bumps on my dog's head that look like hives?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 6 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

I noticed this past weekend my dog had some bumps on top of her head. They were gone later that day, but they’re back again today. They don’t seem to be bothering her and she’s not scratching at them. What could this be? They definitely resemble hives

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. While they can be hives, it is a bit unusual that they are so focal as hives tend to be more generalized and diffuse. There are certain growths that can come and go like Marley's. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!
