Why is my old dog peeing often, straining to poop, and losing weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 17 years and 4 months old | 16 lbs

Hi Megsie is very old and has had a few tests with her urine and it came back being quite acidic, she was given antibiotics and Cistine as she is peeing very frequently. Sometime nothing comes out and sometimes it does and she can't hold herself to get outside. We didn't see any improvement to be honest and she is also on Tramadol 50mg for hip pain. She is also now straining to poop so we've reduced her down to one Tramadol a day. Over the last couple of months she's also lost weight.

Weight loss, difficulty urinating and constipation are concerning, especially when progressive. I would recommend pelvic xrays and possibly ultrasound to check for any obstruction such as bladder stones or growths
