Why is my cat hiding and not eating after we adopted a new kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 15.5 lbs

I have had max for 6 months. I had a kitten who died a week after I got him, so he has been a single cat for a long time. We adopted a 6 month old kitten and have had him for a week now. Yesterday I noticed max was under the bed all day and did not really eat or play, and usually he is very outgoing. I'm not sure if it's the heat wave in LA, or maybe he is depressed because of his new sibling. Please advise for best course of action.

They often hid when they are scared, nervous or sick. If he has been out the week the new addition was added then it is likely an illness that is causing him to hide. If that is the case I would have him checked by a vet to see what the problem is.
