Why does my kitten have crusty, scabby spots and fur loss on her head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 2 lbs

Hi, my indoor cat is suddenly covered in crusty, scabby spots that are also missing fur. They’re mostly on her neck and head, and I’ve seen her licking them. Some are quite large, bigger than a quarter and she’s only about 16 weeks old, so as you can imagine the spots take up a lot of space. What could be going on? She’s eating and playing just fine.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Burger. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She will likely need some skin testing to determine the cause of her skin lesions. She could have a fungal infection such as ringworm or a mite called Demodex that lives within the hair follicles. Allergies to something in her environment, diet or even fleas can cause the lesions you have described. Once it is know what might be causing these spots, then appropriate treatment can be prescribed. Skin disease is frustrating as many conditions appear that same. I hope this information helps!
