My dog has diarrhea after his rabies shot. What should I do for him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 50 lbs

I took my dog to Petco to get his rabies shot. I got him the 3 year shot. It's his first 3 year shot. This was on 8/04/2018 . The next day or day after that he got diarrhea. He's had it ever since. Can I give him anything for it? He does eat his food and drinks plenty of water. I just want him to feel better. Sometimes he will play around and other times he doesn't. Please help me

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buster Young. He will need to see his veterinarian again if the diarrhea continues as he will become dehydrated even though he is drinking. He will likely need a deworming medication or antibiotic based on the results of fecal testing. If he is acting like himself, it is generally safe to withhold food for 24 hours in a large dog. This will rest the gastrointestinal tract and can potentially resolve the diarrhea. If this does not help him, then he will need to be seen again. I hope this information helps!
