What's the right amount of dry and wet food for my cat daily?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 8.2 lbs

Luna eats 1/2 cup of dry food daily (royal canin fibre). I want to start giving her wet food for dinner (fancy feast 85g can). She weighs 3.1kg so how much food should I feed her per day?

Luna should eat about 180 kcals per day. This is about 1/2 cup of the Royal Canin fiber that you are feeding. Fancy feast ranges from about 70-90 kcal per can. Therefore, if you’d like to add wet food to the diet, I’d recommend taking out some of the dey food to avoid weight gain. Consider 1/4 cup Royal Canin for breakfast and for dinner HALF of the 1/4 cup scoop (so an eighth cup) plus half can of the fancy feast. That should be about right for her. Always remember to add new foods slowly and in very small amounts to avoid digestive upset. Best wishes to you and Luna!

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Luna's food! If you want to start giving her wet food for dinner, you need to cut back on the dry food. Give her 1/4 a cup of the dry food in the morning. Read the instructions on the can of wet food, which will tell you the daily recommended allotment she should have of that food. Since she will only be getting one meal of the wet food, cut that recommendation in half and feed her that. I hope this helps!
