I have noticed over the last month or two, my Syrian hamster has gained a lot of weight. He went from 170g (he’s held this weight for over a year) and all of a sudden he weighed in at 242g.. then a few days later we weighed in at 255g! Since his weight gain, I have cut back on treats and he is still gaining weight. He refuses to run on his wheel. All he does is sleep, eat .. and drink water (rarely).

Given his age, he should be physically examined by your veterinarian. If his abdomen is distended, this could be fluid buildup (ascites) which can be indicative of a tumor or organ failure. X-rays may be needed after the exam.
