How to help a recently spayed cat with a fever before a vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 months and 21 days old | 7 lbs

I am a community cat caretaker and have recently been trapping, neutering and releasing them. A year old female recently spayed got sick this weekend, from symptoms, fever. She obviously needs antibiotics and I will be bringing her into the spay/neuter clinic on Monday morning, ASAP. How can I help her until then? I'm forcing water into her via syringe dropper. I've dampened her fur (not wet, wet), taken her inside away from the heat, which she hates. I'm trying to encourage eating.

Hello, it sounds like you are doing all the right things right now. You can offer canned food and make sure you keep her away from the other kittens in case she has something that could be infectious (viral). If she develops any severe lethargy, vomiting, or decreased appetite, then have her evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
