Why do my Boston Terriers have dandruff and how can I get rid of it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Two Boston Terriers 11 & near 10 both have dandruff that I've been fighting to get rid of for nearly a year. Changed their food & give them Probiotics, & Hugs & Kisses Supplement. Sprayed daily with a coat conditioner & wiped down w/ damp cloths & groomed once a month. It has been suggested that they might have food allergies & I should change out their dry/canned food with fish & sweet potato. My older dog won't eat it. They are both on different dry food. What could be causing dandruff?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. Food allergies typically cause vomiting, diarrhea and itchy skin in dogs. This seems unlikely based on your description. Coat quality can definitely by diet though. You want to feed a high quality food such as Hill's, Purina ProPlan or Royal Canin for example. Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach is a great option as it contains high levels of fatty acids to improve coat quality. Next, you can try bathing them with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula once per month. HyLyt is a great choice. Bathing too often will just dry the coat out further. I hope this information helps!
