Is my 80lb dog getting an SMZ-TMP overdose based on her weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 13 years and 4 months old | 80 lbs

We are trying to determine if my dog is getting an overdose of SMZ-TMP. Pills are 480 mg and she’s getting 1.5 tablets. She weighs 80 lbs right now, but the vet seemed to have prescribed this for her previous weight of 93 lb (from last year when she had this round of medication). Is she getting an overdose?

Hello. There is a dose range for SMZ-TMP depending on what the drug is being used to treat. An average dose for an 80-pound dog would be 545 mg every 12 hours, but doses of up to 1636 mg are routinely used in some more serious conditions. So your dose may be appropriate for your pet, especially if she is responding to the medication. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
