Can I treat my pregnant hamster's wet tail with home remedies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My hamster is pregnant and has wet tail can I give her anything over counter? I can't afford a vet. I've only had her for 4 days and noticed when I brought her home she was pregnant and the animal store knew nothing about her and couldn't help. Useless. I'm concerned for the babies and her. She nested the first night and hoarded her food but hasn't left her bed for 3 days now day and night. I've kept watch just about every 2 to 3 hours with concern for her. What can I do? Is this a bad sign?

Wet tail can be very serious to the point of being a life threatening illness in hamsters. Treatment typically requires antibiotics and a low stress, clean, warm environment. Feed only a hamster mix of block type diet. Do not feed fruits or vegetables until she recovers. Keep cage temperature between 70 F and 80 F. Keep her as stress free as possible at all times. Ideally, she should be seen by a veterinarian and have antibiotics dispensed. She may also need subcutaneous fluids to treat dehydration.
