Why is my rescued kitten lethargic and not eating after vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months old | 8 lbs

I rescued a baby kitten 5 days ago, she was eating and drinking on her own, and fairly active for a baby but I noticed she had a squinty, runny eye and some diarrhea so I made a vet appt. Vet said it was viral and perscribed ammoxy drops. She seemed a little tired when I took her home, but otherwise fine. Now today she won’t eat or drink (I’ve been syringe feeding her krm and water) and she’s very lethargic. My next vet appt isn’t until Wednesday, but I’m worried. Is this normal in babies?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lillie! I would have her seen today. Waiting until next week isn't recommended. I would worry that she may have a fever now which can be part of a viral infection and the fever causes lethargy and unwillingness to eat. Also sometimes antibiotics can cause an upset stomach. Viral upper respiratory infections are common but we don't want the cat to stop eating. I wish Lillie a speedy recovery!
